Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza, Rabbi Samuel E. Karff, and Reverend William A. Lawson, affectionately known as “The Three Amigos,” shared a remarkable friendship that transcended faith traditions, race, and culture. United by compassion, justice, and unity, they became trusted voices for civil rights and community collaboration, championing causes that included homelessness, poverty, education, racial equity, affordable housing, and access to justice. Their efforts included supporting the creation of the Harris County Public Defender’s Office, working to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline, mentoring young people, and helping establish the Coalition for the Homeless.

Beyond the walls of their respective houses of worship, The Three Amigos brought people together through pulpit exchanges, civic engagement, and editorials published in the Houston Chronicle, fostering interfaith understanding and encouraging dialogue on issues that mattered to the community.

The Brigitte and Bashar Kalai Plaza of Respect at Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston memorializes their extraordinary bond. Three illuminated glass pillars, each featuring a larger-than-life image of one of The Three Amigos, honor their lives and shared commitment to humanity.

The Three Amigos Foundation carries this extraordinary legacy of faith, friendship, and service forward through scholarships, leadership development, mentoring, and community service, empowering the next generation of leaders to serve and strengthen their communities.
